Population projection

According to the projection, the population of Helsinki will exceed one million inhabitants by 2070.

  • The population of Helsinki is projected to reach one million inhabitants by the year 2070.
  • The population will grow by more than 9,000 people per year in the coming years, but the growth will gradually slow down towards the end of the projection period.
  • The number of people over the age of 75, in particular, is increasing.

The population of Helsinki is estimated to grow further in the coming years, by 9,000 people per year over the next couple of years. The growth will slow down later. Population growth is expected to still be at a level of approximately 7,300 people a year in the 2040s.

In 2026, the population will exceed 700,000 people. According to projections, Helsinki will have around 739,600 residents in 2030 and around 822,000 in 2040. Projections also predict that the population will have exceeded one million by 2070.

The Helsinki population growth is in large part due to a positive net migration, which largely consists of immigration from abroad. Helsinki also experiences migration gain from the rest of Finland outside the Helsinki Region, but loses population to the rest of the Helsinki Region.

The most notable detail regarding the population growth in the coming years is the growth of the oldest age groups. The number of people over the age of 75 will increase from the current 62,000 people to 82,000 people by the end of 2040.
