Neighbourhood Barometer

The Neighbourhood Barometer survey examines residents’ experiences of life in their own neighbourhood. The autumn 2026 survey focuses on Mellunkylä, Meri-Rastila and Itäkeskus.

If you would like your views on your neighbourhood to be heard, now is the time to share your thoughts.

The City of Helsinki is undertaking extensive development work in Mellunkylä, Meri-Rastila and the Itäkeskus area. At the same time, we recognise that the views of residents in these areas have not been sufficiently represented in the City's other surveys. It is therefore important to gather information specifically about the experiences and views of residents in these neighbourhoods.

The information collected will be used in research and practical development work to improve the quality of life and services in these areas. A similar survey has previously been conducted in Malmi, Kannelmäki and Malminkartano.

Every response to the survey is extremely valuable: residents’ own experiences of their neighbourhoods help us make Helsinki an even better place to live.

About the survey

The city has mailed an invitation letter to 8,400 randomly selected adult residents of Meri-Rastila, Mellunkylä and Itäkeskus. The survey can be completed in Finnish, Swedish, Arabic, English, Somali, Russian or Estonian.

Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary, anonymous and confidential. The contact details of invited participants will be destroyed once data collection has been completed.

As the data controller, the City of Helsinki is responsible for planning the survey, analysing and retaining the research data and reporting the results. Digitalist maintains the survey platform and acts solely as a data processor. Digitalist does not store, own or modify any data. Responses will be treated confidentially and anonymously and will be used only for research purposes. Research findings will be utilised in Helsinki’s urban planning and in the development of residential areas and services.
