Throughout the 2000s, Helsinki’s population has been growing by an average of around 5,500 people a year. In August 2026, Helsinki's population surpassed 700,000 inhabitants, according to calculations by the Urban Research and Statistics unit of the City Executive Office. Growing most rapidly are the proportion of people of working age, who are moving to Helsinki to study or work, both from other parts of Finland and from abroad. Growth is not an end in itself, however. Growth brings more opportunities for study and work, more vibrant neighbourhoods, better services and a diverse Helsinki that reflects everyone’s individuality.
We’ve put together a playlist that brings together Helsinki-themed tracks, music by Helsinki-based artists and song requests from the city’s residents.

Throughout history, people have moved to Helsinki in search of a better life. The first wave of migration from rural areas to the capital began in the 19th century, and within three decades Helsinki’s population had grown by 20,000. In recent years, too, our city has grown at a record pace, primarily as a result of migration. Population projections indicate that Helsinki will be a city of one million residents by 2067.
